Atishoo! So your kitten is sneezing and you don’t know what to do. First of all, know that a sneeze or two is often just that a kitten sneeze or two, nothing to worry about. However a kitten who is constantly sneezing may be demonstrating that she has a more serious condition. What are some reasons a kitten might sneeze?
Kitten allergies! No, I don’t mean humans being allergic to kittens… I mean kittens being allergic to other things. Among other things kittens can have a reaction (often sneezing!) to pollen, dust, cigarette smoke, chemicals, mold, carpet cleaners, aerosols, dust in kitty litter, candle smoke and other stuff. All these things could cause your kitten who is allergic to one or more of them to be sneezing. Humans who have allergies often sneeze because of them – just like your kitten sneezing.
When a kitten is continuously sneezing it could also be a symptom of Upper Respiratory Infection. This is very common and contagious among cats, it is like a cat version of the flu. URI affect the nose, mouth and sinuses, caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Other symptoms of this kind of infection include fever, wet nose, coughing, and watery eyes.
Sometimes a kitten manages to get a foreign object stuck inside her respiratory tract. Sometimes you will be able to dislodge the object yourself using a flashlight and tweezers. If you are unsure, or uncomfortable about doing this – take your kitten to your veterinarian. This is actually quite uncommon.
Sometimes tooth decay can be behind the continuous sneezing in kittens. If your kitten has are bad breath, swollen gums, and puss in the mouth area. Young kittens are not very likely to experience tooth decay but it is possible. Various different things can cause sneezing in kittens.
If you notice continuous sneezing in your kitten, and you can’t see clearly why, take your kitten to the veterinarian.
